SPETSES

An island boasting a long naval tradition, Spetses has managed to retain its individual character thanks to its well-preserved grand captain mansions, bearing witness to the island’s glorious past.

Named “the island of aromas” by Venetian merchants for its position on the spice route, Spetses features pine-covered hills, secluded beaches and horse-drawn carts. The town of Spetses (pop. 4,000) is the only large settlement on the island.

Since private vehicles are not allowed on the island, the most common modes of transport are walking, horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles. Trails encircle the island and total about 25 to 30 km.

Thanks to its proximity to Athens, Spetses has long been a favorite cosmopolitan getaway destination, as reflected in its smart cafes, high-end restaurants and stylish boutiques.

Poseidonion Grand Hotel, which first opened in 1914, was the brainchild of Sotirios Anargiros, a visionary benefactor who was responsible for much of Spetses’ development. Furthermore, it represented the cosmopolitan face of the island and soon became one of its famous landmarks, a favourite destination for the high society, royalty and the wealthy Athenians.

Following a meticulous five-year restoration programme which has brought the hotel fully up to date with the finest facilities, fixtures, and fittings while carefully preserving the original architecture of the building, Poseidonion Grand Hotel, fully refurbished, re-opened its doors in the summer of 2009, ready to welcome new visitors.

The hotel comprises of two buildings with superior and deluxe rooms and suites, several with private gardens or balconies offering spectacular views of the Dapia port area and the sparkling blue-turquoise sea.
